Alcoholism
Signs
Alcoholism signs can vary from person to person,
however if you think you have a problem with drinking
or are experiencing alcoholism signs you may find the
answers you need here. NIAAA estimates that about 14
million, or 1 in every 13 people, have a "problem"
with alcohol. Alcoholism, which is characterized by
a component of dependency on the part of the drinker,
is a treatable illness. To outsiders, alcoholism signs
just look like a lack of self-control and composure
on the part of the problem drinker, however they are
but symptoms of a sickness.
Alcoholism does not discriminate
across race, ethnic, economic or social backgrounds;
anyone can be alcoholic.
The four major alcoholism signs are
as follows:
· Tolerance - needing more
alcohol to feel the same "drunk"
· Loss of control - being unable to control the
amount of alcohol one takes
· Physical dependence - withdrawal symptoms such
as shakes, nausea, and anxiety
· Craving - an obsession or compulsion to drink
If you think you may be an alcoholic
there are a few questions NIAAA uses to classify a drinking
problem.
· Do you ever feel bad or
guilt about your drinking?
· Do people annoy you by criticizing how you
drink?
· Do you ever feel like you need to cut down
on your drinking
· Do you ever drink in the morning to feel better?
If you can answer "yes"
to one of these questions you may have a problem with
drinking and if you answer "yes" to more than
one of these questions you most likely have a problem.
Alcoholism signs can also present
themselves in family, social, and work situations, making
it hard to function in everyday life. Many people think
that alcoholism signs are treatable without help, but
the majority of people who stay abstinent from alcohol
over long periods of time find help for their problem.
Hospitals, rehabilitation centers and sober livings
can all be safe havens for a person with alcoholisms
signs to get help. Through the help and understanding
of licensed medical professionals people with drinking
problems learn how to change their way of life in order
to recover.
